Wood Stove

Wood Stove
steves homemade wood stove the sequel

What is the difference between a wood stove purchased in a hardware store and one bought at a fireplace dealer

I have a farm house just given to me that is about 1000 SQ. Ft. and need to buy a wood stove. They are cheaper at the hardware stove but not sure if it is worth the savings.

No offense to you or any others who answer; but the basic notion should be the same. Even the manufacturers might be the same, and that's one place you should check.

I was born and raised on a farm, and we had no "FirePlace" stores to shop decorative stoves, or trendy ideas in the model year changes through evolution.

"Practical" was, and should still be the Key Word in your search. If it's aesthetics you want; there are hundreds of models and varieties available. If it's service you want; the field might be as large. The PLACE of purchase might have very little to do with eventual effectiveness and efficiency.

Also without knowing at all the particular hardware store, as opposed to a big box type Fireplace store; you might consider the smaller operation to be more intune with its customer base and their needs.

Obvious to me; isn't so much any initial cost; but what the appliance will produce; it's structure; serviceability; life span; etc.

Log Cabin Birdhouses - a Log Cabin Home for Your Birds

Americans have been in love with the image of their ancestors living in log cabins for many years. It is a concept firmly rooted even in our political history, where as far back as the time of the Whigs of William Henry Harrison who used the symbol of the log cabin to identify with the common man. Seven of our early presidents were born to families living in log cabins, to further drive home the ties to our early history. Of course the stories of Abraham Lincoln and his youth in log cabins cement the love affair we have with the log cabin.

Some of that allure was the basic design of the house. The logs were cut and notched, and stacked together so they interlocked, and the finish was mud or grass to "weatherproof" the cabin.

Log Cabins for the Birds

So birdhouses that emulate that simplicity are a favorite design. They range in complexity from simple one room cabin designs crafted from wood. You can find some that are not even wood, but are ceramic reproductions, and these come in varied colors and themes. The ceramic houses are on the small side, and attract much smaller birds such as wrens.

For actual wooden houses, they are fashioned from traditional wood products like fir, and you will find a wide range of sizes. Simple one room houses, some that look like frontier homes, and some look more like multiple story plantation homes or mansions, but still with a log cabin exterior.

These days with an increased emphasis on sustainability in our purchases, you will find some log cabin birdhouses that are made from bamboo. This is a great material for building, and is actually stronger than some more traditional hardwoods. Some of these look more like huts, but others look like the traditional log cabin.

Shop around for some log cabin birdhouses and you can find the one that's right for your yard.

A Pre-Built Log Home Offers Quality and Value

When you think of a log cabin you probably think of the old days when they were built by hand. Everyone in the area would come and help their neighbor build it. You might even be familiar with kits being used to build them. Blue Ridge Log Cabins introduced the concept of pre-built log homes to the industry.

We have built a cutting edge facility for the construction of each pre-built log home that we make. Our 110,000 square foot facility is unrivaled in the log cabin industry. This method of building houses has been used for traditional stick built homes for years. When our owner considered the benefits of this method he decided to apply the technique to log homes.

The advantages to a pre-built log home are numerous. Here are just a few of them:

  • Time – A pre-built log home constructed by this method can be completed in a much shorter time frame. All of the necessary personnel are on site and ready to work on each house. There are no scheduling problems.
  • Weather – The elements are not a factor when a house is built within our facility. It is completely under roof for the entire process. We don't have to wait for rain delays or snow to clear.
  • Quality control – Our quality control measures are applied every step of the way. There's never a lonely worker working on a site by himself when your pre-built house is made in our facility. We have a dedicated team of people overseeing the work.
  • Cost control – Our buying power and oversight allow us to control costs. The efficiency of our method results in cost cutting advantages as well.

If you have dreamed about enjoying the log cabin lifestyle but thought the price was out of your range, consider a pre-built log home by Blue Ridge. Our homes are built to meet or exceed accepted building standards and the quality is industry recognized. We can help you realize your dreams at a price that you can afford. How to Make a Bird Feeder : Attaching Hinges to Bird Feeder

How to stick to wood?

How could I say some glue to 12 inches and 6 2x4 blocks together to make them twice as long. I'm going to rip into 1x4 to make bird houses and other small things. I wonder what would be the best and easiest method to connect to get longer. We, of true! What kind of joint cabinet I can use? I am speaking as end to end

wood glue and clamps work if the wood is already planned. Of course it would need long tweezers if you are trying to glue them together for more length. An easy way to do this without using tweezers is to get some bolts of your local rail of the ladder. These cost a few dollars each and you need a drill. Your local ladder company should be able to explain how to use them. We use them to connect sections of rail together when necessary. You have to remove the wood 1 "x 4" before the bolts together. Once tightly bound together, filling the cracks with wood putty and fill the drill holes with plugs or outlets download button mushrooms. Another way to do this which can be cheaper would be to use wooden pegs instead of rail bolts. I recommend using at least 3 per joint. Still needed a drill. You also need wood glue. I want to extract the wood first, then drill the holes evenly spaced on both ends to be joined. It is important that the holes are aligned. Add a little glue into the holes and insert the studs, then fasten the wood together until the glue dries (usually overnight is a long time). Of course, this method will cost you more if you need to buy calipers 3.2 feet long. Good luck with your project.
