How to stick to wood?

How could I say some glue to 12 inches and 6 2x4 blocks together to make them twice as long. I'm going to rip into 1x4 to make bird houses and other small things. An easy way to do this without using tweezers is to get some bolts of your local rail of the ladder. These cost a few dollars each and you need a drill.
